Movies that amaze during the Holidays

Halloween is officially done and dusted! I hope everyone has either finished ‘Stranger Things’ Season 2 or you’re in between ‘Mindhunters’ and rearranging your Christmas decor. This winter’s varied selection of upcoming movies is the perfect gift for me this year. From the mythical mind of Guillermo del Toro with ‘The Shape of Water’ and Johnny Depp starring in the all-star remake of ‘Murder on the Orient Express’. I am so excited to take my 3-year old to see ‘Coco’ on the big screen opening weekend (November 22nd). Given my cultural background- Mexican/Puerto Rican-American. Disney and Pixar dove deep into Mexican cultural history to bring this feature film to life.

Coco (2017) Coco Movie poster (Disney and Pixar)

I can appreciate all of the intricate details in this movie poster. The marigolds, the elote, the pan de muerto, and the papel picado are all significant pieces during the celebratory Día de los muertos (The Day of the Dead). The film already has had major success in Mexico, which released October 27th just in time for Día de los muertos, observed on November 1 and 2. Director Lee Unkrich explained the synopsis of the movie in an interview with Collider; “We thought it would be interesting for our story to have a character caught in the middle of that tug where they had passions their family didn’t approve of, but they still loved their family. Miguel doesn’t just want to run away from his family and do his own thing, he wants to find a way to have it both ways; but he seems to be in this impossible situation where he can’t figure out how to do that. It’s this opportunity to go to the Land of the Dead and actually meet his long dead ancestors and his new idol that he hopes will unlock the secret to having it both ways.” Be sure to check out Coco in theatres November 22. Also, this is Disney and Pixar’s last original feature film… of the 2010’s… before we’re bombarded with sequels.

Director: Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3)

Murder-on-the-Orient-Express-New-Film-PosterMurder on the Orient Express (2017) Movie poster (20th Century Fox)

The greatest detective in the world, Hercule Poirot, returns to the big screen with an even more luscious mustache in ‘Murder on the Orient Express.’ This movie is at the top of my list of movies to watch before the end of the year. As an enthusiast of the Suspense/Crime/Mystery genre, this film deserves my support and Sir Kenneth Branagh has my respect. This is Branagh’s second movie to be shot in 65 mm film, the first film was Hamlet in 1996. The story is an adaptation of Dame Agatha Christie’s novel that was published in 1934. She was “indisputably the best-selling novelist of all time” having sold over two billion copies. If you’re like me and haven’t a clue as to who dies or who killed who, then I would suggest for you to stay away from any movie reviews of this film to avoid the thrill of being surprised.

Director: Kenneth Branagh

Lead Cast: Kenneth Branagh (Detective Hercule Poirot), Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Daisy Ridley (Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Josh Gad (Olaf in Frozen), and Johnny Depp

Runtime: 114 minutes

We’ve finally arrived at the end of the year, the most festive time of the year. Where we celebrate Thanksgiving with a grand spread of a meal with our loved ones who’ve traveled near and far. Typically, the dinner is followed by a night at the movies or perhaps searching around Amazon for a rental. So, here are my suggestions for this year’s ‘After Thanksgiving dinner Movie List’ :

In theatres

  • Murder on the Orient Express
  • Coco
  • Daddy’s Home 2
  • Justice League

DVD/Rent

In the days leading up to Christmas, you don’t want to forget to enjoy a traditional Christmas movie or two. After you’ve snapped as many 10-second videos of people opening presents on Christmas morning, cleaned up the ripped wrapping paper, and enjoyed a grand slam of Christmas brunch… you might be the one to suggest catching the matinee at your favorite movie theatre or perhaps take a peek at Amazon’s movies to rent. Again, here are my suggestions for this year’s ‘After Christmas morning Movie List’:

In theatres

  • Bright (available for stream on Netflix December 22)
  • The Shape of Water
  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi
  • Ferdinand

DVD/Rent
